A Participant’s Journey: Insights from the Global Leaders Program
Emilie Walker (Director at Pradera) shares her journey as a Visionary Leader in Real Estate
As part of the Global Leaders Program by Maastricht Center for Real Estate (MCRE), participants gain transformative insights into real estate leadership, innovation, and global collaboration. For one participant, the experience has already sparked impactful moments, new skills, and a clear vision for the future.
A Moment of Impact: The JV Negotiation Exercise
When asked about the most impactful moment so far, Emilie highlighted the joint venture negotiation exercise. “It was a great way to bring together different skills and to see how others approached the task in the room,” they shared. This hands-on activity emphasized not only technical expertise but also collaboration and adaptability—key traits for any leader in today’s dynamic real estate market.
A New Way to Test “Fairness” in Agreements
Among the many technical insights gained, the use of the Treynor ratio stood out. She explained, “It’s a reward-to-volatility measure that I now think about applying to test fairness in agreements using a range of scenarios. Even if I don’t use it directly, it’s shifted how I think about fairness in negotiations.” This ability to adapt theoretical tools into practical applications is exactly what the program strives to achieve.
The Value of a Global Network
One of the program’s cornerstones is its global network of participants. Emilie noted, “Gaining a global perspective is key. It’s been fascinating to learn from others, and I hope the program continues to expand to include regions not yet represented.” The diversity in professional experiences and cultural backgrounds provides unparalleled opportunities for learning and collaboration.
Case Studies with Small Groups: A Transformative Learning Experience
Another highlight was the case study sessions, particularly in small working groups. These interactive discussions offered a chance to dive deep into real-world challenges and explore different perspectives. Emilie suggested combining case studies with site visits to create even more impactful learning experiences.
Shaping a Vision for the Future
The program isn’t just about technical skills—it’s about shaping future leaders. She shared how their focus is shifting: “I’d like to emphasize leadership, tech, and sustainability more in my work over the next five years.” The program is helping participants build not just the skills for today, but the vision for tomorrow.
What Lies Ahead?
Looking forward, Emilie hopes to explore:
- The future of cities and new asset types.
- Tackling controversial real estate topics such as ESG backlash and gentrification.
- Emerging markets and proptech updates, including the role of AI in real estate.
Programs like the Global Leaders Program empower participants to step up as visionary leaders, tackling challenges and driving innovation in a rapidly changing world.
